Cambridge House Advocacy Service

An advocate will help with any issue which is affecting a young person's ability to live independently or to reach their full potential - whether it relates to health, education, social care, leisure or family. This includes helping parents to access appropriate suport for their child or to challenge unsatisfactory decisions.

An advocate will meet with the young person, and where necessary their family or carers, to talk about the issue and find out what the young person would like to change or happen. The advocate will visit the disabled young person in their home, school, college or other preferred setting and can support them in a variety of ways, including:

Helping their views to be heard, supporting them to speak for themselves for example in a meeting, exploring choices and options with them, helping them to understand and secure their rights.

The service also works with disabled young people who lack capacity using non-instructed advocacy. In these cases - for example where the young person cannot communicate their view by any means, an advocate will make sure  the young person is kept at the centre of decisions made about them and that decisions are made in their best interest.
